Projects

Our Cathedral is over 800 years old and in need of constant love and attention. Below are just a few of the projects we are working on and raising money for.

Round Tower Restoration Project

Cloyne is fortunate in possessing an 11th century Round Tower in a very good state of preservation. Although it is currently inaccessible to visitors, Cloyne District Community Council is currently exploring options to open the tower to the public once more.

The Tourist Trail

The cathedral is currently developing a visitor trail to cater for both intrigued adults and curious children. We aim to make your visit pleasant, informative and, hopefully, full of surprises.

To achieve this we need funding and we would also welcome suggestions from our visitors.

The Organ

The present cathedral organ, built into the south transept, is an instrument of about 1835, rebuilt by the Cork builder Megahy in the 1930s. It incorporates much of an earlier organ of about 1780, that was originally on the screen up in a gallery.

The instrument, which is presently in a very grave condition, is two manuals and pedals, on 3.5 inches of wind, with a ratchet / trigger swell box. The flue work on the great organ is the oldest pipework, dating to the late 18th century. The organ can also be blown by hand from a curious ‘blowing chamber’ reached from the Longfield Chapel. It is interesting to see the generations of graffiti scratched into the woodwork around the bellows.

The Windows

Over the years the Irish weather has taken it’s toll on our windows. Some of the stained glass is broken and needs to be repaired. We are looking to raise funds to help restore them.

The Roof

In the past year some slates have been replaced on the roof of the north transept and the guttering repaired however the South transept roof of the Cathedral is in a poor state of repair.

The rainwater goods are either rotten or missing causing serious damp issues in the Longfield Chapel. Repointing of limestone coping stones, carved eaves course and a section of historic random rubble is required. There is also a lot of missing and loose slates.

Our latest quotation for this work is over €7000.00
