Activities with Friends of Cloyne

The Friends of Cloyne Cathedral was set up in 2011 by a group of people who were interested in organising events and raising funds to help with the maintenance and development of the Cathedral, which is an important and significant national monument. Our Patron is Bishop Paul Colton of the Cork, Cloyne & Ross diocese.

The launch of ‘The Friends’ took place on 18th November 2011 and, following a cheese and wine reception, Dean Alan Marley welcomed a crowd of over 70 people who attended the function. In addition to the historical details he highlighted the potential of the building as a venue for the arts and encouraged members of the local community to get involved.

We also have links to Blackrock Observatory and University College, Cork through two of the best known bishops of Cloyne namely Bishop John Brinkley (Brinkley weekend – mid September 2016) and the renowned philosopher, Bishop George Berkeley.

The Friends have worked well together with their fundraising efforts and are very active throughout the year. We have recently joined up with the Round Tower Restoration Group and our next major project, scheduled for this summer, is to attract more tourists to the area by opening up the Cathedral and putting self-guided tours in place.
